Getting noticed: Small ways to market yourself better

Share

We know job searching can feel overwhelming. Through our own hiring process and conversations with students, grads, and career shifters, we’ve learned some tips and tricks to help you market yourself better.

Understanding what you bring to the table

Before you start updating your resume and LinkedIn, it helps to take a step back and be clear on what makes you a great fit.

Here are a few ways to start:

  • Think about the skills and experiences that have shaped you.

  • Look at past projects—what do they say about your strengths?

  • Ask a mentor, professor, or teammate for their perspective.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • New grads → Projects, internships, and coursework matter. What tools have you used? What problems have you helped solve?

  • International students → Highlight adaptability, cross-cultural experience, and unique problem-solving skills.

  • Career shifters → Connect past experiences to the new industry. Transferable skills are your superpower.

Resume Tips & Tricks

A clear, thoughtful resume helps people quickly understand who you are and what you bring. When writing your resume, it’s important to keep the following in mind:

  • Your name might be the most important thing on your resume. Make sure it’s the first thing people see and is at the top of your resume.

  • Contact info + links to showcase your work is super important too. Make sure it’s functional, accurate, and easily accessible.

  • Resume formatting is important and will demonstrate your attention to detail.

  • Spelling, grammar, consistent fonts + sizing, aligned margins, etc.

We’ve created a simple template with prompts and questions to help you get started.

Building an online presence that works for you

Sometimes, hiring teams want to learn more about you before you even hop on a call. They want to get a sense of who you are, your interests, and the kind of work you do before the interview.

Here are some quick ways to freshen up your LinkedIn profile:

  • Keep your LinkedIn updated (photo, banner, and details matter).

  • Share projects, case studies, or things you’re learning.

  • If possible, have a portfolio—even a simple Notion page works!

  • Engage with your industry—following and commenting on discussions can go a long way.

Depending on where you are in your career:

  • New grads → Share your projects, open-source work, or personal case studies.

  • International students → Highlight global experiences and perspectives.

  • Career shifters → Talk about your journey—what you’re learning and how your experience connects with your new path.

Bring your own questions

Interviews aren’t just about proving you’re the right fit—they’re also a chance for you to find out if the company is right for you. A little research can go a long way:

  • Look into the company’s work—if something interests you, ask about it!

  • Culture is also a big part of organizations, you can search them up on their social media, on their team page, and other places they share a glimpse of what it’s like to work there.

  • Are you curious about mentorship? Ask how they support growth.

  • Want to work in a collaborative team? Ask how they work together. What the typical day looks like for the position you’re interviewing for.

Marketing yourself is just about helping the right people see what you’re all about. It doesn’t have to feel like a huge task—small things like updating your LinkedIn, sharing a project you’re proud of, or connecting with someone new can go a long way.

Keep learning, keep putting yourself out there, and know you have something valuable to bring.
